KEY CONCEPTS

Here are some key concepts of trigonometry you will need to know to understand this unit fully.

tangent ratio

The tangent ratio is a trigonometric ratio for acute angles that involves the lengths of the legs of a right triangle. Tangent can be used to calculate flight paths and angles of flight.

COSINE AND SINE RATIOS

The sine and cosine ratios are trigonometric ratios for acute angles that involve the lengths of a leg and the hypotenuse of a right triangle. Cosine can be used to find missing sides of a triangle in real life, and sine can be used to calculate anything from radio waves to musical tone!

A QUICK MNEMONIC

SOHCAHTOA stands for sine = opposite/hypotenuse, cosine = adjacent/hypotenuse, and tangent = opposite/hypotenuse. This will help you remember how to set up the ratios so that you can calculate them.
